The Leaky Pipeline

While women within the ASEAN insurance industry dominate entry-level positions, their numbers rapidly shrink within the higher levels. The results of a study by the ASEAN Insurance Council and International Finance Corporation sheds light on the reality of gender equality within the industry.

The ASEAN insurance industry faces a striking contradiction. Women comprise 60% of its overall workforce and an impressive 64% of entry-level positions, yet their representation evaporates as one ascends the corporate ladder.

By the time leadership positions are reached, the picture looks dramatically different: women hold just 33% of C-suite roles and a mere 25% of board seats. This sharp drop-off reflects not only a failure to nurture and retain talent but a missed business opportunity in a women’s insurance market projected to reach $1.7tn globally by 2030.
